Mariepskop

Self-Driving, walking

Mariepskop

Rising 1.945 meters above sea level Mariepskop is the highest peak in the northern Drakensberg with magnificent views of the Blyde River Canyon.

Due to its military background and hence the lack of development the area has remained fairly untouched. Mariepskop and the surrounding Nature Reserve are home to 1400 floral and 2000 plant species in a unique combination of tropical mist forest and fynbos – popular with hikers and birdwatchers alike.

This secluded getaway can only be accessed with a permit from the Mariepskop Forestry Station about half way up to the summit. Rustic accommodation are offered to stay overnight in the adjacent forestry settlement as well.

The reserve offers various hiking trails, such as the Bushpig, Loerie, and Magi Day trails, which are best explored with a guide.

Self-Driving

The adventurous climb up Mariepskop Pass starts from the Lowveld at Klaserie where the R40 turns right onto the R531 and crosses the railway line. It’s a gravel road – best to avoid when wet!
Once you’ve passed the permit office and the SADF Gate, the road turns into a tar road (Rohrbeckpad Road). Easy!
